At the beginning, there was nothing ...

Then, they said : ''Let the EM-DJE-SEE be''

and the CHÉCY M.J.C. was born.

This area has been inhabited for nearly 400 000 years. So it is not surprising to learn that.

On the opportunity of archeological diggings, flint tools and bronze weapons were found, all originated from local workshop and foundries.

At first a Celtic settlement (Carnutes) Chécy became later a prosperous Roman city due to its convenient location at the junction of antique Vias linking Agendigum, Augustodunum; and Genabum (Autun, Sens and Orleans respectively). As a Vicus (sort of transport logistic platform) Chécy became famous - or rather infamous - for its M.J.C or Mensa Joci Carnuticus, loosely translated by “Local Casino”.

Having overcome the invasions by the Huns (also called Uns or Ones) in 1111, the history of Chécy took a new turn in 1429 when a young maiden from Lorraine landed here to prepare an attack in order to free the besieged city of Orleans. She took quarters, as expected, at the M.J.C. (Mansion of Jehanne at Chécy).

The present M.J.C. was created on a warm evening of May 1974 by our 3 Musketeers Marbrier, Desvergne, Lacroix and Lacroix (yes, they were 4 !)

At the time, the M.J.C. was an attraction center offering such amenities as a library, a photography/cinema workshop, drawing and painting lessons, archeological and boating facilities as well as a committee towards a pairing between Chécy and Champigny-Valais in Switzerland.

But some of those activities were soon given up to be replaced by other ones such as theatre, choir, tightrope, enamelwork, table tennis, kites, etc. Also exhibitions, dancing parties and walking rallies, only to be later on, discontinued... So is life...
